Entering the last year of his contract, Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield set an extension deadline for the start of training camp in late July. After that date passed without an agreement, it appeared talks between the Bucs and Mayfield would go dormant until 2027. Appearances were deceiving in this case. Although Mayfield’s self-imposed deadline came and went over a month ago, the sides were not far off then, according to reports from Albert Breer of SI.com and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. With $40MM already guaranteed for 2026, a $150MM total guarantee number is in place on the quarterback’s third Bucs pact — one that is now official. The full guarantee figure and future vesting dates are not yet known, but the $110MM in new guarantees is certainly a strong number for a player who was set to play out a $33.3MM-per-year deal this season. After receiving offers he described as “not appealing whatsoever,” Mayfield broke off talks and is set to play out the final year of his current deal, which means there is a possibility he will become a free agent in March.
